Dislocated Temporalities in Motion
Below is a rule based shooting protocol, written as an operational system rather than an aesthetic guideline. It is focused specifically on detecting mismatches between moving bodies and object based time references in the street.
Objective
To produce photographs where time is visibly misaligned. The image must reveal a discrepancy between human movement and the temporal status embedded in objects, surfaces, signs or infrastructures.
Time is treated as plural. Bodies carry lived time. Objects carry historical, functional or symbolic time. The photograph is valid when these
times fail to coincide.
Definitions
Moving agent
Any human or animate presence whose posture, gesture or trajectory implies temporal flow.
Object time reference
Any non human element that encodes time implicitly or explicitly. Examples include clocks, advertisements, worn surfaces, obsolete technology, seasonal signage, architectural styles, repair traces, timestamps, schedules, brands, fashion residues.
Mismatch
A visible contradiction between the time suggested by movement and the time suggested by objects in the same frame.
Core Rules
Rule 1. Movement first
The shutter is triggered in response to movement, never in response to objects alone. Objects only become relevant once a moving agent enters their temporal field.
If there is no movement, do not shoot.
Rule 2. Identify object time before framing
Before lifting the camera, mentally tag the dominant object based time reference in the scene. Ask only one internal question. What time does this object belong to.
Shoot only when a moving agent contradicts that time.
Rule 3. Prefer temporal contradiction over visual contrast
Do not seek beauty, symmetry or graphic clarity. Seek temporal inconsistency.
Examples
- Fast movement against obsolete infrastructure
- Slow movement against urgent signage
- Contemporary devices against decaying surfaces
- Repetitive gestures against fixed historical markers
If the contradiction is purely aesthetic, discard.
Rule 4. Frame relations, not subjects
No central subject rule. No hero figures.
The frame must hold at least one moving agent and one object time reference in visible relation. Cropping is allowed if it increases temporal tension.
Partial bodies are acceptable. Partial objects are acceptable.
Rule 5. Accept temporal noise
Motion blur, misalignment, occlusion and imperfect timing are not errors. They are indicators of temporal instability.
Do not correct blur caused by movement. Do not wait for clean alignment.
If the image feels too resolved, do not keep it.
Rule 6. Photographer as temporal interference
Remain in motion while shooting whenever possible. Walking, turning, slowing down or accelerating introduces a third temporal layer.
The photographer’s movement must contribute to the mismatch, not stabilize it.
Standing still is allowed only if surrounding movement is dense.
Rule 7. One mismatch is enough
Do not stack multiple concepts in one frame.
A single clear temporal discrepancy is sufficient. Additional symbols must remain secondary.
Rule 8. No narrative completion
Do not follow subjects. Do not anticipate outcomes.
Each frame is an isolated temporal event. Sequences are accidental, not constructed.
Selection Protocol
During editing, apply these exclusion rules.
Reject the image if
- Movement and object time feel synchronized
- The image reads as documentation of an event
- The temporal contradiction needs explanation
- The image relies on nostalgia or irony
Keep the image if
- Time feels slightly wrong
- The relation is evident but unresolved
- The image resists a single temporal label
Operational Summary
The street is treated as a field of asynchronous clocks.
Bodies move according to lived time.
Objects persist according to historical or functional time.
The photograph is made at the point where these clocks disagree.
The goal is not to show the present.
The goal is to make temporal mismatch visible.
Bergsonian Mismatch Detection Protocol (BMDP)
Core premise
Time is not a sequence of identical instants. Time is duration. Lived, elastic, continuous. The street contains competing temporal regimes. Bodies operate in lived duration. Objects and systems impose segmented, external time. The protocol detects moments where these regimes fall out of alignment and triggers image capture.
Definitions
Lived Duration (LD)
Continuous, qualitative time carried by moving bodies. Detected through gait variation, hesitation, acceleration, micro-gesture.
Object Time Reference (OTR)
Quantized or imposed time encoded in street objects. Examples include pedestrian signals, timetables, turnstiles, countdown displays, conveyor motion, escalators, ticket validation rhythms, rotating advertisements.
Mismatch Event (ME)
A measurable divergence between LD and OTR. The divergence is temporal, not emotional or symbolic.
System State
The operator maintains three concurrent observation loops.
- Body Flow Loop
Tracks velocity, rhythm, pauses, and directional changes of human bodies. - Object Time Loop
Tracks periodicity, countdowns, cycles, or automated motion of non-human systems. - Alignment Monitor
Continuously evaluates synchronization or desynchronization between Loop 1 and Loop 2.
Detection Rules
Rule 1. Identify a dominant Object Time Reference
Select one OTR per scene. Ignore secondary rhythms. Lock attention to the most explicit or mechanically enforced temporal structure.
Trigger readiness when the OTR demonstrates repeatability or countdown behavior.
Rule 2. Establish expected compliance
Observe how bodies normally adapt to the OTR.
Examples:
- Bodies speeding up as a signal approaches zero.
- Bodies queueing in rhythmic pulses.
- Bodies matching conveyor or escalator pace.
This establishes the baseline temporal contract.
Rule 3. Detect duration leakage
Monitor for bodies that fail to compress into the object’s time.
Indicators include:
- Deceleration where acceleration is expected.
- Pauses inside a countdown window.
- Gestures that extend beyond system cycles.
- Micro-adjustments that ignore imposed rhythm.
This is Bergsonian duration asserting itself against spatialized time.
Rule 4. Confirm mismatch persistence
A valid ME requires persistence longer than a single beat.
Minimum condition:
- The body remains out of sync for at least one full OTR cycle or one clearly perceivable phase shift.
Do not trigger on anticipation or correction. Only on sustained divergence.
Rule 5. Prioritize qualitative asymmetry
Select bodies whose internal rhythm appears continuous while the OTR remains segmented.
Priority increases when:
- The body’s motion is smooth against a stuttering system.
- The system advances while the body suspends.
- Multiple bodies comply but one remains temporally autonomous.
This isolates lived duration from mechanical time.
Capture Trigger
Rule 6. Shoot at maximal temporal tension
Initiate capture at the moment where reconciliation becomes inevitable but has not yet occurred.
This moment is characterized by:
- Imminent system enforcement.
- Visible bodily refusal or delay.
- Coexistence of two incompatible temporal logics.
Do not shoot at resolution. Do not shoot at entry. Shoot at irreducibility.
Framing Constraints
These are functional, not aesthetic.
- Include both the body and the OTR in the same temporal field.
- Do not crop out the time reference.
- Maintain spatial clarity sufficient to read the imposed rhythm.
The image must contain evidence of both temporal systems.
Termination Conditions
Abort capture if:
- The body fully synchronizes before persistence criteria are met.
- The OTR loses clarity or becomes ambiguous.
- The scene collapses into purely spatial interaction without temporal conflict.
Output Criteria
A successful capture must allow a viewer to reconstruct the mismatch without narrative explanation.
The image should function as a temporal diagram:
- Lived duration visible through bodily continuity.
- Object time visible through segmentation or automation.
- Their incompatibility readable at a glance.
Bergsonian Alignment Note
This protocol treats photography not as freezing time but as exposing time’s internal heterogeneity.
